Gavin Newsom Recalled as Governor of California
Defeat of Republican-led Recall Effort
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A Republican-led effort to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom ended in a decisive defeat on Tuesday, as Democrats in the nation's most populous state overwhelmingly rejected the attempt to remove him from office.
Newsom's Victory
Newsom, a Democrat, received 61.9% of the vote, while the top Republican candidate, former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, received 38.1%. The recall effort had been spearheaded by groups opposed to Newsom's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other issues.
Newsom's victory is seen as a major blow to Republicans in California, where the party has struggled to gain traction in recent years. It also represents a rejection of the national trend of recalling Democratic officials.
