Avallon's mayor, Jamilah Habsaoui, has been detained by police following a major drug bust at her residence. Authorities seized approximately 70 kilograms of cannabis during the raid, leading to the arrest of seven people, including the 45-year-old mayor and two of her brothers.
Habsaoui was elected mayor in March 2021 under the banner of the Diverse Left party. However, she previously belonged to the Socialist Party, which she left in 2017. The circumstances surrounding her departure from the party are unclear.
The raid on Habsaoui's home involved dozens of police officers, investigators, and a canine unit. The investigation into the mayor's alleged drug involvement is ongoing, and further arrests are possible.
The seizure of such a large quantity of cannabis has sent shockwaves through the community of Avallon, which has a population of around 6,000. Residents have expressed their concerns and are awaiting further information from authorities.
